Savings and Goals Journal #29

I am making progress on finishing those projects around the house that have been partially done for too long. I do a little work here and there, with “help” from the grandkids and the pets. 🙂

In the Kitchen

I enjoyed planning another week of meals using things from the pantry and freezer. The upcoming week includes two slow-cooker meals. These will be great to free up some time since I’m doing home projects and also doing extra bookkeeping (end-of-year stuff for my dad’s small business.)

This week’s meal plan:

Once the laundry area makeover is finished, I am moving on to finishing the kitchen. This will be a big project as I’m planning to redo the countertops, add a backsplash and finish the painting and trim. I will also be decluttering. I’d like to try to have fewer things on the counters. And I have big plans for the pantry. As an incentive, I’ve promised myself new curtains for the windows. I’ve had my current kitchen curtains for over twenty years! They are wearing thin from washing and they are faded from the sun.

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I am looking forward to making it more functional and pretty. By doing things myself and making budget-friendly choices, I can keep the cost low.

In the Garden

Grampy and I did some cleaning up in the yard. Our back yard area between the house and the kids’ play yard isn’t attractive at all. We have the stepping stones to make paths, which I hope to do in the spring. That’s another project to finish!

I’m hoping as BooBoo the dog grows up, she will stop digging crater-sized holes in the yard so that I can plant grass. We have grass in the kid’s play yard, but the other part of our back yard is just dirt. I have a huge pile of wood chips we had delivered last summer. I am going to spread some of them in the back yard to try to cut down on the mud and also to help improve the sandy soil for when we do plant grass. I will also relocate plants to the front of our house where I can see them from the kitchen window and enjoy them.

We already have most of the supplies we need for our garden and yard projects, so the cost to complete them will be low. It will just be an investment of time.

Home and Family

Grampy and I went for our eye exam. I am terribly nearsighted and need a very strong prescription. Each time I get new glasses I am so thankful for our vision insurance to help with the cost.

I had to go to a different hardware store looking for some of the trim I needed for the laundry area. I was happy to find it for $2.00 less per piece than the store that was out of stock! We checked first at our local Habitat for Humanity restore for cabinet knobs and trim, but they didn’t have either.

I found a container to use to put lint from the dryer in. It’s actually a mailbox I found on clearance. I am spray painting it and adding sticker letters to the front. It will look kind of like this when I’m finished.

Have a wonderful week!
