In the Garden

Favorite Gardening Blogs and YouTube Channels

It’s a snowy day in January and I’m thinking about gardening! As I’m writing this post, the snow is coming down outside. It’s a reminder that spring is still weeks away and I won’t be basking in the sunshine and playing in the dirt for quite a while.

Winter in our area (NW New Mexico) is fairly mild most years, but by January, I’m ready for warm days and sunshine. To lift my spirits on wintery days, I often watch gardening videos or read gardening blogs or websites. I’ve shared some of my favorite budgeting blogs and YouTube channels in a previous post. Today, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite places to find gardening information and inspiration.

Ready? Here we go!

Gardening YouTube Channels

Living Traditions Homestead. I’ve watched this channel for several years. They raise the majority of their food, and I’ve learned tons about seed starting, planting, harvesting and preserving through their videos.

Gardener Scott. I’ve recently become interested in raised bed gardening, and this channel has lots of great information. He has some good information about amending soil and plant care. I’ve learned some tips about pruning lilac bushes that I’m going to try this year.

Roots and Refuge. This is another channel I’ve watched for years. This is where I go for information about tomato plants and for general inspiration and encouragement.

Garden Answer. This is the channel I go to when I want to be inspired to make our yard beautiful. I’m interested in the plants they grow because I live in a similar climate (Zone 5). I don’t watch this one as much for vegetable gardening information. I watch it because the flower gardens and landscaping are so beautiful. While I don’t have the resources or space to do what they do, I can create my own beautiful yard with the space and resources I do have.

Gardening Blogs and Websites

The Prudent Homemaker. This blog is my favorite budgeting/money saving blog, and also one of my favorite gardening blogs. It shows that with some planning, you can grow lots of food in a little space!

I love the idea of blending beauty and functionality in the yard. I think this post provides excellent examples of growing food and having a beautiful yard at the same time.

Our cooperative extension service website through the New Mexico State University. I’m sure most states have something similar. This website is packed with information pertinent to our climate.

Roasted green chile…a New Mexico staple!

I hope you find some useful information and some inspiration for your upcoming growing season. While I do sometimes grumble about winter weather, I am also thankful for the time to rest, plan and work on other projects. If you already garden, I hope you’ll be encouraged or try something new. If you don’t garden yet, I hope you’ll give it a try!

Thanks for sharing. I have clicked on the above websites (except for Prudent Homemaker because that is where I found your site) and am going to check them out now.
