Old-Fashioned Applesauce Spice Cake

A simple, moist applesauce spice cake filled with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. This easy 9x13 cake is perfect for fall baking and lovely with coffee or tea. Makes 12 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
  • Add the buttermilk, applesauce, softened butter, shortening, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on low to medium speed until combined.
  • Increase the mixer speed to high and beat for 2 minutes.
  • Add the eggs and beat for another 2 minutes.
  • Pour the batter into prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Cool on a wire rack.
  • If desired, dust with powdered sugar after cooling.
