My Word of the Year for 2026: Forward
Every January, I like to choose a word to gently guide the year ahead. Not a resolution. Not a rigid plan. Just one steady word I can return to when life feels busy, uncertain, or a little overwhelming.
For 2026, my word is Forward.
Not fast.
Not perfect.
Just… forward.

A Year of Big Decisions and Quiet Realizations
Over the past year, I’ve found myself standing at a crossroads more than once. Some of my goals moved slower than I expected. Some plans changed. And some decisions — especially the decision to retire and close my home daycare — took a lot of careful thought and prayer.
Caring for children has been a huge part of my life for several years. It’s been meaningful, exhausting, joyful, and demanding — often all at once. Deciding to close that chapter wasn’t easy, but it became clear that this season of life is asking something different of me.
Choosing Forward is my way of honoring that truth.
Why “Forward” Feels Right for This Season
There’s a strange space that comes after a big decision. You’re not fully done, but you’re no longer the same. You’re preparing to let go of one rhythm while learning what the next one might be.
That’s where I am right now.
Forward reminds me that I don’t have to have every detail figured out before I begin moving into this next chapter. It gives me permission to release what no longer fits — routines, expectations, even parts of my identity — while still trusting that something good is taking shape.
Moving Forward After Closing My Daycare
Retirement doesn’t mean stopping — it means shifting.
Moving forward after closing my daycare looks like:
- Letting go of full, noisy days and welcoming quieter, more intentional ones
- Reclaiming time and energy for my home, my health, and my creativity
- Creating a daily rhythm that supports who I am now, not who I was ten years ago
It also means allowing myself space to rest, reflect, and reset — without guilt.
How I Plan to Move Forward in 2026
Forward with Finances
With retirement on the horizon, I’m continuing to approach money thoughtfully and gently. My focus is on:
- Steady progress toward paying down debt
- Living within my means with intention
- Making choices that support peace, not pressure
Forward here means preparation, not panic.
Forward at Home
After years of running a busy daycare, my home is also transitioning.
Moving forward means:
- Decluttering with purpose, not urgency
- Creating calm, cozy spaces that support this next season
- Letting my home feel less like a workplace and more like a sanctuary
This part of the journey feels especially meaningful.

Forward with Health and Energy
This season has reminded me how important it is to care for myself with kindness.
Moving forward means:
- Respecting my energy instead of pushing past it
- Paying attention to what my body needs
- Choosing habits that support long-term well-being
I’m learning that caring for myself is not selfish — it’s necessary.
Forward with Creativity and Purpose
As I step away from daycare, I’m stepping toward something else — writing, creating, sharing, and encouraging through The Budgeting Granny.
Moving forward here looks like:
- Creating consistently, not constantly
- Sharing real life, not curated perfection
- Offering encouragement and practical ideas for cozy, intentional living
This work brings me joy, and I’m excited to give it room to grow.
A Gentle Invitation
As I’ve been thinking about my own word for the year, I realized how helpful it is to have a simple place to slow down and reflect — without pressure or perfection.
If choosing a word for 2026 feels helpful to you, I’ve created a free printable reflection sheet you can use to explore your own word.
It’s not about picking the “right” word.
It’s about choosing one that meets you where you are — and gently points you where you want to go.
👉 You can download the “My Word of the Year Reflection Sheet” here and take a quiet moment to reflect on what this next season might hold.
This is a simple, undated reflection you can return to anytime.
A Closing Thought
As I move into 2026, I’m choosing Forward — with intention, patience, and grace.
Some days will be slow.
Some steps will be small.
But I’m committed to continuing on, even when the path unfolds one step at a time.

If you’re walking a similar road, I’m glad we’re here together.
Here’s to moving forward — into the next chapter, one thoughtful step at a time. 💛
