Cozy Homemaker Journal – January/February 2026 Reflections
Winter Reflections on Home, Budgeting & Simple Living
Winter always feels like a quiet reset in our home. The holiday rush fades, the house grows calm again, and I start thinking about the year ahead — not in big dramatic resolutions, but in gentle little improvements.

This time of year is full of tea, planning notebooks, and the slow return of daylight in the evenings. I’ve been taking things one small step at a time, and that feels just right.
💸Budgeting Wins
This winter has been a season of steady progress.
Over the past couple of years I’ve worked hard to cut unnecessary expenses and focus on what truly matters for our home and future. Some things were easy to let go of, and others took more adjusting, but every little step has helped.
One small example was cancelling our regular pest control service a while back and learning to handle basic prevention ourselves. Little changes like that quietly add up over time.
We also made the final payment on that pesky credit card that had overstayed its welcome for far too long. Knowing that our money in retirement will not be going toward a credit card payment is a comforting feeling.
And there’s something else that has felt especially encouraging lately.
My blog — The Budgeting Granny — has started generating its first small income through ads. It’s not a fortune, but seeing that first payout threshold reached felt like a tiny celebration. Every bit of it goes right back into the project fund for our home and garden dreams.
It’s proof that slow and steady really does work.
🍲In the Kitchen
Winter cooking is my favorite kind of cooking.
This is the season of soups, casseroles, and warm meals that make the whole house smell like home. I’ve been restocking the freezer with simple meals and soups — what I like to call my little “freezer library.”
A few of my recent favorites have been hearty soups with spinach, roasted vegetables, and homemade broth.
I’ve also been baking some cozy things here and there. I made Grampy’s favorite Fudgy Brownies. Pumpkin bread also made an appearance recently, and it reminded me that some of these recipes really need to make their way onto the blog.
Retired Michelle will have plenty of time for that soon.

🌱In the Garden
Even though it’s still winter, the garden has already started calling me outside again.
I’ve begun tidying little areas here and there — cleaning up old garden debris, picking up stray bits from past projects, and thinking about what will grow where this year.

I have big plans for our yard, mostly in an unused area I have named “Birdsong Meadow.” It is still mostly quiet for now, but plans are taking shape. Lilacs have been planted, and someday the greenhouse and raised beds will stand there too. I imagine little winding paths, pockets of wildflowers, a place to sit and relax and listen to the birds….
This first year after retirement will probably be a year of foundations: organizing garden spaces, planting long-term shrubs and trees, and slowly building the systems that will make everything easier in the years ahead.
Gardens, like homes, grow best when you take your time.
🏡Home and Family
One of the nicest parts of this winter has been spending more relaxed time with family.
Recently we had a Sunday lunch with one of my daughters, my son-in-law, and my grandson. It was one of those simple meals where everyone eats well, visits around the table, and nobody is in a hurry to leave.
Those are the moments that make a home feel full.
I mentioned that I am calling my future garden area “Birdsong Meadow.” And I have decided to name our home “Birdsong Cottage.” We have several mature trees and lots of little feathered visitors. I think it’s perfect.

😊Retirement Reflections
This winter also marks the beginning of a big life transition for me.
After several years of running a home daycare, I’ll be closing that chapter at the end of March. Originally I had planned to keep working until June, but March is the right time for me to close. Some days are long and loud, and I can definitely feel the wear and tear of those busy years. Grampy and I are definitely more than ready.
But I’m also grateful for the families and children who have been part of our lives during that time.
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what life will look like after that final daycare day.
More time in the garden.
More writing.
More quiet mornings with tea and cats stretched out in sunny windows.
Nothing dramatic.
Just a slower, more peaceful rhythm centered around home.
And honestly, that sounds pretty wonderful to me.

Winter won’t last forever.
Before long the garden will wake up again, the days will grow warm, and a new season will begin here at home.
Until then, I’m happy with small progress, cozy meals, and the promise of what’s coming next.
