How to Start a Cozy Cottage Garden (on a Budget)

There’s something about a cottage garden that just feels like home.
Not the perfectly planned kind you see in magazines…
But the kind that grows slowly, a little wild, a little unexpected—
Where flowers lean into pathways, herbs tuck themselves between stepping stones, and every corner feels lived in and loved.
Lately, as I’ve been dreaming about retirement and being able to spend more time caring for our home, I’ve found myself drawn more and more to this kind of garden.
Not perfect.
Not expensive.
Just… cozy.
And the best part?
You don’t need a big budget—or even a big space—to begin.
🌼 What Makes a Cottage Garden… a Cottage Garden?

A true cottage garden isn’t about rules.
It’s about:
- Mixing flowers, herbs, and even vegetables
- Letting things grow a little freely
- Using what you already have
- Adding beauty slowly, over time
It’s the opposite of pressure.
It’s permission.
💛 How I’m Approaching My Cottage Garden

Right now, I’m working with what I have:
- Areas of our yard that have nothing growing in them (except weeds! 😉)
- A few plants I already have growing around the yard and some inexpensive seeds
- Some ideas (and a little bit of imagination)
I’m not trying to finish it all at once.
Instead, I’m:
- Adding a few plants at a time by moving existing plants, or planting seeds
- Watching what grows well in our area
- Letting it evolve naturally
Some days it’s planting flowers.
Some days it’s just standing there with my tea, imagining what it could become.
And honestly… that counts too.

When I started thinking about this space, I found myself coming back to the same simple reminders over and over again.
Not rules—just little nudges to keep things cozy and doable.
So I turned them into a printable I could keep nearby while I work.
Things like:
- Start small
- Use what you have
- Mix beauty with function
- Let it be a little wild
- Add something each season
Simple, right?
But sometimes those are the things we need most.

- One page has my personal cozy reminders
- One blank page so you can create your own

You can tuck it in a garden binder, hang it in your shed, or just keep it nearby as a gentle guide.

🌿 A Little Note from Me
If you’ve been wanting a cottage garden, but feeling like you don’t have the time, money, or the “perfect setup”…
Let this be your permission slip.
Start with one plant.
One corner.
One small idea.
That’s how all the best gardens begin.
Slowly. Gently. And with a whole lot of heart.
