Turkey Patties
This recipe started with a basic poor man’s steak recipe that used ground turkey, crackers, water, and salt and pepper. We like those, but we like our food to have lots of flavor. I took that basic recipe and added lots of stuff. The result was a delicious turkey patty that Grampy loves.
Lean ground turkey goes on sale in our area for under $2 per pound. I use it in this recipe and save the more expensive ground beef for making tacos, hamburgers and meatloaf.
How to make Savory Turkey Patties:
You’ll need:
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 1/2 cup crushed saltine crackers (about 10 crackers)
- 1 beaten egg with water added to make 1/2 cup
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon basil
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon parsley
- 2 teaspoons chives
Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Then, form the mixture into patties. I usually get 6 to 7 patties. Fry the patties in a frying pan on medium heat. I add a small amount of oil to keep them from sticking, and I think it helps them cook better.
I let them brown well on the first side before turning them. On my stove this is about 5 minutes, but that can vary. If you turn them too early, they may fall apart. As they cook (after I turn them) I flatten them a little with the spatula. Turkey should be cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees. I usually just check the middle to be sure they are done.
We like to eat these with potatoes, salad or veggies. The grandkids like them with macaroni and cheese. I’ve also cut them up and put them on my salad at lunch. Sometimes we put them on bread with mayonnaise and cheese.
Turkey Patties freeze well. I let them cool and then put them in a storage container with waxed paper between them. They are great to have on hand when Grampy needs something to take for lunch at work.
