The Cozy Budgeting Companion: A Simple, Free Monthly Budget Printable

This free monthly budget printable was created for those of us who want to keep track of our money without making budgeting feel complicated or overwhelming.

I haven’t always kept things quite this simple, though.

For years, I was a paper-and-pencil budget person. When we were working on paying off debt, I used a Clever Fox Budget Planner and found it really helpful. There was something satisfying about sitting down with my planner, filling everything in, and watching those balances slowly go down.

But eventually, our finances—and my life—changed.

We paid off the debt (hooray!), and when I retired from my daycare, I was more than ready for a break from paperwork and bookkeeping. After years of keeping records for the daycare along with our household finances, I found myself thinking, No more bookkeeping unless absolutely necessary!

I also started noticing that more and more of the pages in my budget planner just didn’t apply to us anymore. I wanted an easier way to keep track of our everyday spending without writing down every grocery-store trip and household purchase by hand.

So I started using a free budgeting app for the details.

And I loved the convenience.

But apparently, I wasn’t quite ready to give up paper altogether.

There’s just something about writing the numbers down and seeing them on paper that makes them feel a little more real. I think it’s similar to the difference between handing over cash and swiping a card. Either way, you’re spending the money—but somehow, handing over that cash makes you a little more aware of it leaving!

I didn’t want to go back to tracking every purchase by hand. I just wanted that little bit of connection with our money again—a chance to sit down once a month, write out the bigger picture, and actually see where we stood.

Not another complicated budgeting system. Not pages and pages of trackers. Just one simple place where I could look at the month as a whole.

And that’s how my Cozy Budgeting Companion came to be.

I’ve been using my own version for the past couple of months, and I’m now starting month three. It gives me exactly what I was missing: a simple monthly overview without duplicating everything my budgeting app is already doing.

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Free Monthly Budget Printable

I intentionally kept this one simple. The Cozy Budgeting Companion:

  • Gives you an at-a-glance look at your monthly finances
  • Includes space for income, expenses, savings, and sinking funds
  • Lets you compare what you budgeted with what you actually spent
  • Gives you room to jot down notes and reflect at the end of the month
  • Works beautifully alongside a budgeting app or whatever system you already use
  • Uses just one working page per month
  • Is easy to print at home
  • Is completely free to download

You don’t need to use your budget exactly the way I use mine, either. The categories and blank spaces are there for you to make it work for your household.

☕ How I Use My Budget Planner

I think this printable works best when you let it do one job well.

For me, my budgeting app handles the details. It keeps track of individual transactions, organizes spending into categories, and does all the number-crunching that I don't particularly want to do by hand.

The printable gives me the big picture.

At the beginning of the month, I can write down our expected income and budget amounts. As the month goes along, I can check the app when I need the details. Then I use my printable to record the actual numbers and see how everything came together.

I also like the little monthly review at the bottom.

Instead of simply thinking, Well, we spent too much on groceries again, I have a place to stop for a minute and ask:

What went well?
What could I improve?
What will I do next month?

That makes budgeting feel less like keeping score and more like learning as I go.

And at this stage of my life, that's exactly what I want from a budget.
