How To Create a Woman Cave On a Budget
Hello there! If you have ever found yourself yearning for a little space of your own—a place where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and simply be, perhaps you need a “woman cave.” Just like men can have a “man cave,” a woman cave is your own personal sanctuary, a cozy corner of the world where you can relax, enjoy hobbies, or just bask in a moment of solitude. Let’s talk about why a woman cave is a good idea, and how to create one on a budget.
The Benefits of a Woman Cave
Sometimes life can get a little overwhelming. I’m an introvert. Even though I work at home, I relish time in the evening all by myself. Did you know that having a personal space can boost your mental health and decrease your stress levels? Creating a woman cave gives you a place to go to relax, and to do something you want to do: read, work on a hobby…whatever you find relaxing.
You may be concerned about the cost of creating a woman cave. But it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! The cost of setting up a space can range widely, but we like to do things on a budget around here. Frugality is our best friend, and there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to make your dream a reality.
Finding Space for Your Woman Cave
Do you have a spare room, a guest room, a corner in the living room, or even a section of your basement that could be the perfect place to transform into your woman cave? Start by identifying an area in your home that isn’t being used to its full potential. The most important thing is to find a space that makes you feel at ease, so probably not a corner of the laundry room. Walk through your home with an open mind, and think creatively. Even if your home is small, maybe with some rearranging and a bit of decluttering you can carve out a little space just for you. Even a small space can become a cozy retreat with the right touch.
At our previous home I had a she-shed. It was a backyard shed that we insulated, installed carpet in and painted. I don’t know if other people name their she-sheds, but I named her “Shedna,” and she was adorable. I loved spending time there, but since it was separate from the main house, sometimes it was a little warm in the summer, and could definitely be a bit chilly in the winter. In our current home, I am turning our daughter’s old bedroom into my own space…my very own “woman cave.” It’s at the back of our home, so even if the living room is full of family members watching football, I can sneak away to read and have a cup of tea, and it’s perfectly peaceful. It’s really the best thing.
What Will Your Woman Cave Be?
What are your interests, favorite activities and needs? Write them down and try to visualize how you will set up your space. Do you need a work surface for craft projects? Do you crave a reading nook? Or maybe you knit and need storage for yarn? Think about how you want to use your woman cave. Knowing these things will help you make decisions about how to design, furnish and decorate your space.
My weekdays are busy caring for 4-5 children aged 3 and under in our home daycare. In the evening, I want a quiet place where I can put my feet up with a good book and a cup of tea. My woman cave has a comfy recliner and a small side table with a lamp.
Consider how your space can serve more than one function. My space is a place where I read, drink tea, relax and work on my blog. I also have a small desk where I work on my budget. (Am I weird because I find working on my budget to be relaxing?) I have a television as well, and sometimes I play music on YouTube, or watch YouTube videos. It’s also a place my older grandkids can come to watch television, read or draw. Sometimes they need a break from all the little kids in the daycare, and sometimes they hang out with me while everyone else is watching football. They call my space “Granny’s Hideaway.” I think it’s a good name.
Time to Set a Budget!
Wouldn’t it be lovely if we all had endless resources? I don’t about you, but I certainly don’t. Setting a realistic budget is important. After creating a she-shed using the small shed in our backyard, and now creating a woman cave using a room in our home, I’m finding that it’s much less expensive to turn an existing space in the house into a room of my own.
A good way to get started is to list potential costs: furniture, paint, decor—and then prioritize what’s most important to you. You may not be able to do or get everything on your list right away, but you can get started and build from there. Part of the fun is using your creativity and seeing your space evolve over time. Of course, do-it-yourself projects and second-hand treasures from yard sales or the thrift store will stretch your dollars. Everything in my woman cave is second-hand.
Setting the Mood
Do you have a favorite color or theme that brings you peace? I like blues, greys and neutral colors. My daughters say I’m boring. I find those colors relaxing. You could create a mood board with colors, textures and themes you like.
I am in the process of making over my space. I’m giving the accent wall a fresh coat of paint. It was a rather dark green. I’ve painted it a medium grey. The rest of the walls are white. As time and money allow, I will paint them a warmer color. If possible, let your woman cave be a reflection of you. That might be more difficult if you’re using a corner of a room, but if you have your own space, unleash your creativity!
Make It Comfy!
If this is going to be a place you come to relax and unwind, comfort is important. Think comfortable furniture, cozy throws, and plush cushions. Choose pieces that say, “Come on in and relax.” My space has a loveseat and a recliner, both very comfortable places to sit and relax.
The loveseat is in front of the sunny window and is a favorite napping place for the cats. I purchased my loveseat years ago for $30 at a storage unit sale. It was in perfect condition. It’s pretty worn after all these years, but it’s the perfect comfy cozy couch. I cover it with a big quilt and add throw pillows. It looks cozy and inviting. The recliner was found for $50 on Marketplace. It was like new and is very comfortable. Comfort on a budget!
Add Your Personal Touches
Incorporate elements that reflect your personality—photos, artwork, or memorabilia. I’m going for a crazy cat lady/grandmacore aesthetic. I think that a woman cave is a perfect place to display things that may not have a place elsewhere in your home, but that are meaningful to you: an heirloom quilt, souvenirs from your travels, sentimental items. If it makes you happy to see it, maybe it can have a home in your woman cave. Make your space uniquely you.
Lighting and Gadgets
Think about both natural and artificial lighting options, and choose lighting that complements your activities. Ambient, task, and accent lighting will give you versatility. My space has three large windows, so I get lots of natural light. I have a basic overhead light, and my lamp for reading in the evening. I’m planning to install fairy lights after I put up shelving for decor. When you’re trying to relax, you’ll want cozy lighting.
Decide what, if any, technology you’ll be bringing into your space. A speaker for music or a tablet for reading may work well and won’t take up a lot of space.
Keep It Tidy
A clutter-free environment can make it easier to relax and focus. Keep things tidy and organized. It’s easy for any extra space to become a catch-all and get filled with clutter. Once you create your space, make it part of your routine to tidy up and clear out unnecessary items. If needed, use baskets, shelves, and bins for storage. Opt for furniture with storage to keep things out of sight and keep your space calming.
Let It Grow With You
Remember, your woman cave doesn’t have to be perfect from the start. Allow it to grow and evolve as you do. Part of the fun of having your own space is that you will make it into just what you want and need. It may take time to make it into what you envision, but don’t be afraid to redecorate or rearrange as your needs change.
You may start with just a chair and a lamp. Over time you can add things like plants, artwork, or a desk to make the space perfect for you. The best thing about adding things slowly is you have time to figure out what you really want and what will work best in your space. Also, adding things slowly gives you time to shop around and find things that are unique and budget-friendly.
Are You Ready?
Creating a woman cave is about carving out a space that speaks to you. Whether you’re relaxing, creating, or simply daydreaming. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about creating a space that feels right for you. So, take your time, enjoy the process, and most importantly, make it your own.
Until next time, happy creating!
